Eric et all,

I was 100% truthful in disclosing and describing the item I was selling to a "T." The item was a Phil Wood axle assembly for a rear (Phil) hub. It was being used as a "sneak-a-toke" pipe by some employees at a once very reputable bicycle shop here in Palo Alto.

The Service Manager at said shop let me dig through their old stuff and that is when I stumbled upon the "axle." When I picked the axle up out of the corner of one of the boxes, I noticed two Mechanics looking over at me with very stressed looks on their faces; you could see beads of sweat on their foreheads. I had no idea the axle was "what it was" until I was listing it and smelled something eminating from the axle. It smelled like my clothes did after attending Van Halen concerts at the Cow Palace in San Francisco back in the early 80's. I pulled the axle assembly apart and found a bud, a screen, and a whole lot of resin inside. I made the sale (of the axle) to some guy for $5.50. (Of course the insides of the axle were thoroughly sanitized prior to shipping.)

I have nothing to do with the Silca plunger washer auction.

Ted Baer The guy behind the sale of that fabled axle auction. Palo Alto, CA
