Despite my general unhappiness with this issue and the new orientation I'm afraid it indicates, one of the many interviews in this issue should not be missed. Freddy Maertens, at age 50, is now a guide at the Belgian national cycling museum, where CS interviewed him. One of the most interesting bits was his opinion of Eddy Merckx, with whom he has had a standing feud since King Eddy felt that a young Maertens failed to support him at the World Championships in Barcelona in the mid 70's. Maertens freely concedes Merckx's stauts as the greatest cyclist ever, but still views Merckx as petty and vain personally. Even today, it takes a lot of nerve for anyone, especially a Belgian, to state such an opinion of Merckx. Of course Maertens has always been outspoken, probably too much so for his own good, and his feud with Merckx, which he claims has been perpetuated only by Eddy, along with other unpopular views, has no doubt contributed to his less than easy life after cycling. I haven't a clue whose version of the Barcelona championships, and the once-famous feud which ensued, is true. But it is fascinating to hear the view from the other side and to see that Freddy is still brave enough - or foolish enough - to tell it.
