To All Bike Riders with Bones:
Muscle metabolism expends calcium. Endurance athletes who don't chow down on calcium rich food can reduce their bone mass, weight-bearing excercise or not, simply due to a lack of material. Triathletes and aerobics instructors have the same problem.
There was an article in the cycling press last year about the health studies being done on Tour de France riders and it was verified that after the tour the riders' skeletal mass was significantly reduced.
I suspect that the average reader of BICYCLING! probably does not ride often enough -- or eat little enough -- to justify worrying about this problem!
