I am not sure how much older information is dropped in each addition, but I do see that the newer Editions are consitantly get thicker. I think thier up to over 500 or so pages now. The 3rd and 4th are only about 250 pages long. The 1st Edition came out around 1974 and the last one, the 6th Edition was in 1995, and I've seen a 1996 suppliment added. I doubt much road bike info was dropped from the 1st to the 5th Ed. I have the 3rd, 4th , & 5th editions, and they look about the same, with only a few models of rims added to the later versions along with several revisions and some new hub specs listed. I agree, that for most purposes here, you probably won't ever need anything much later than the 3rd or 4th editions. The later ones do have some revisions, and added hub information, but most of it's for mountain bikes, threadless stems, and later index systems. The info you need the most really never changes, mainly thread sizes and spoke charts. Most of us are probably pretty able to handle most component repair and adjustments, and most components are pretty similiar. The only odd exceptions are those really old gadgets we've never seen before that pop up from time to time, but even Sutherland's is no help with those. The link to Sutherland's is: http://www.sutherlandsbicycle.com/SBSAhandbook.html At last check the current copy is still the 6th Ed. and is already sold out. I'm sure there are several book dealers online who still have a few left, but at $125, eBay sounds like a good alternative.
