Rust-o-leum makes a grey primer (non spray) that you'd find in a small can at most hardware stores. I THINK this is ok to use under an auto paint or nail varnish. I know the traditional red rust-o-leum is NOT suitable for this as it doesn't like lacquer or synthetic auto enamels. It's a good idea to use a primer or undercoat when painting raw metal just make sure you let it dry thorughly before applying the finish coat. Auto enamel would be a safer topcoat over primer paint than nail varnish which is lacquer based and can do very weird things with paint.
