Gang,

Thanks for all the replies that I received.

I am going to put on the Mafacs with some more modern pads and see how that works. I am sure it will be perfect. There was nothing wrong the the brakes. They are unused brakes sitting on some shelf somewhere. All parts still in the stapled bag. Unused 5 dot pads. Box is Ok shape.

My old Deores are in good shape, too, except for the 20 year old grease on the springs that need to be cleaned up.

Those pictures are the "before" on the bike. I just got tired of looking at it sitting there so I sent it off to Cyclart (along with my credit card).

It turned out great - better than I expected and I will put up some after pictures when I get it all done. I am sure it will be soon as it is at the point where it is driving my crazy with it sitting there in pieces.

The bike shop that I was referring to has a good reputation, but I think that I just got one of the younger guys and that was his opinion. Normally I try to talk with one of the more seasoned guys, but they were all chatting away about one ride or another. We'll see.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice you have given, it has been invaluable.

Chris,

Campbell, CA (I think that's what you wanted, right Dale)
