And I remind us:

As long as we keep it reasonably light-hearted, i.e. in perspective, it's fun. I started teaching in a rough/poor section of Tucson in my mid-30's (51 now). I've got students whose families live in cars, or 2 families in one bedroom trailers with no windows, water, or electricity. I deal with kids who grab up uneaten burgers at lunch so they can eat at night. Some are emotionally/physically beaten; others are resilient as hell and use school as an escape. They work hard, learn, and listen to me when I tell them what the outside world is like and what's possible for them. They are fascinated when I wheel in an old fixed gear and teach lessons in history, geometry, or math. They're amazed at what I do on those bikes and when I explain to them that they can do the same things if they stick to their guns and don't give up. When I get home at night I use the CR list as my escape. It's better than a kick in the pants to read these little quibbles, and even get involved in a few (sometimes just for the sake of it- not that I actually know anything!) Please keep it up guys, but keep it in perspective. And thank you.
