OK, we all know "my wife is going to kill me if I get another bike"....

Well, one possible solution is to corrupt the missus and get her into collecting classic lightweights.

Today, my wife (who is in England until autumn) took delivery of her first classic British lightweight: a 1957 Raleigh Lenton Sports. Ladies frame. FM hub, dynohub, carmine red, original mudguards and fittings. All-rounder handlebars. Cost: £20

The owner provided the following information on this bike:

"A bit of history about the bike. It seems to have been made in 1957, I got this by checking on the web to a site that gave ages for Raleigh serial numbers. I can't find the site now and the link I had doesn't work. The info is probably on another site now.

The cycle was purchased in Alton, Hampshire, possibly from Ransomes cycle shop, and was used for some time, no dates known, it was then used by a District Nurse who used it to visit her patients around Alton. The nurse was married to a local GP (Doctor), my wife was the doctor's receptionist, and used the bike for errands. When the nurse and doctor retired in the late 1970's my wife was given the bike and used it daily until a few years ago. "

Actually, 1957 was the last model year for the classic Lenton Sports so she got herself a good one. Now, if it and those delicate celluloid mudguards will just survive the trans-Atlantic crossing...
