This was in the Saturday London Times:

Thief with a fetish crammed his house with 1,000 bicycles

POLICE who caught a well known bicycle thief in the act in Melbourne were upset when he collapsed and died.

But they were astounded when they visited his home in Geelong to discover 1,000 bicycles stacked in every room, along with helmets, chains, saddles, tyres and gears.

Superintendent Steve Barber said that the threebedroom house was “virtually packed to the brim with bicycles”.

Mr Barber said that the man, who was in his sixties and who has not been named, was caught trying to steal a bike in the centre of Melbourne when he collapsed. He added: “It appears the man was well known to a number of bicycle premises in Geelong.” In addition to stealing bicycles, he was not averse to buying them.

Police faced the logistical nightmare yesterday of removing the bicycles and trying to find their owners.

Senior Sergeant Adrian Benny, the police officer assigned to the case, said he had never seen anything like it. “In every room including his bedroom, bathroom and kitchen there are bikes,” he said.

“There are also bikes down the side of the house and two of the sheds are full of them. He must have had a bike fetish.”
