Subject: [CR]Bike for Ray? Derosa Value

Sorry guys, I just had to throw in my $00.02 worth here.

I think much of this discussion has been about price vs value. Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who referredd to someone as "knowing the price of everything, but the value of nothing"?

In my opinion, an '80 Derosa in very good to excellent , that fits the rider , is well worth the 1 kilobuck. After all, what are you going to buy new for that money? and where will that new bike be in 20 years? Perhaps the question should have been asked: "What is the market value of said Derosa?" That is an entirely different thing. depending on a number of variables, 1K seems at about market or slightly above. I also believe in the 25 year rule, and am given to believe that this bike has not yet had its day in the market. While not sharing the rarity of other sought-after bikes of the mid-70's, now having their heyday in the marketplace, it seems there ought to be some headroom in the price, given a variety of factors. these factors are: a growing market place for vintage bikes, expanding interest in road biking in general, etc. In short, I believe this bike is a "comer" and I would consider it well bought at $1K, and very well bought at $800. In other words at it's FMV. After all, how many Masis, Cinellis etc. do we wish we would have bought at their respective FMVs several years ago?

All that stuff is meaningless when it comes to riding the bike, so you have to ask yourself: Am I going to ride it, or try to play the market with it? If you are trying to play the market, buy it, put it away and pray. Maybe you'll make a little money, I think you will. If you want to ride it as it was intended, better yet. Kit it out the way you want,(save the original stuff, of course) and ride it like you stole it. You can always come up with another grand, but if it turns out the be a bike you just love to ride, you just got away cheap.

worth all of 2 cents.
