I think the situation is probably similar to the Campagnolo HiLo Record rear hub (large right flange and small left flange) that was reputed to be originally custom-made for the West German Olympic Team in 1972.

That is, I think someone ordered a bunch of the 41 tooth rings and Campagnolo made a run of them to sell themselves, just like the HiLo. Not really a matter of quiting to offer them, just that they didn't make another production run of the things is all.
