I've known people who worked in the steel mills of Joliet and Gary. As part of their job, they'd have to identify steel. They could tell by the type of spark it made. I don't recall what was used to create the spark. Just some hand held tool. A stone of some sort I think. I wonder if this technique applies to bike tubing.
