Steve makes interesting points - but I don't think they make a case either way.

The point I was making regarding the brake reach was that a shorter reach front in not indicative of a necessarily later bike. In fact, according to Steve's logic the shorter brake in the front compared with the rear would be consitent with later centerpull brakes. But this isn't relevant, as if I'm correct, Cinelli bikes until the late 60's or even early 70's used a longer reach brake in the rear.

I may be incorrect with my dropout understanding - but the first generation Record rear, I believe, from 1962 or 1963 had a protruding spring that needed the hole in the dropout. That makes both Steve's and my analysis rather shakey and each inconclusive.

What Steve didn't touch on was the claim by the original owner that the frame had its bb shell shaved. My understanding (not based on documentation except I think I read it in Sutherlands years ago) was that the 74 width shell was used on Cinelli bikes from about 1962 through 1964. That would certainly push the bike into the later period and indicates that the original owner is contradicting himself if my info on bb width is correct.

The only firm conclusion I can draw is that both myself and Steve have only marginally advanced Jan's efforts to date the bike.
