Jan and Dennis,

This is very interesting thread.

I have cotterless Campy Gran sport, steel/chrome plated crank with alloy rings from late 70's which is not historical. But two other facts I would like to mention.

1) I used to see many alloy rings in Japan in mid 60's for inexpensive regular street bikes with steel cottered cranks.

2) AND, I was told that not only weight saving BUT alloy rings were lasting longer although soft material, because they take friction were less as brass.

One more addtion, it is easy to make (cutting/shapings) alloy rings than steel with chrome plated finish in good conditions.
