I wonder which "26 inch" sized tire the article was actually describing? I would not be surprised if the bike actually used 650c tubulars, whose rim diameter is 571 mm. These are frequently called 26" but are obviously a different size than the 559mm wheels used on mountain bikes. Of course, I still have no idea why he would have chosen to use this size wheel/tire combination. Perhaps it allowed for geometry that's more appropriate for an older rider?
