Someone asked a few days ago how many riders died during the Tour. There were three: Tom Simpson in 1967, Fabio Casartelli in 1995, and Francesco Cepeda, who crashed on the descent of the Galibier in the same year that this photo was taken, 1935. This Tour had other misfortunes as well: Antonin Magne, in second place, was hit by a car and had to abandon, and later the same fate befell Francesco Camusso, also second at the time.

On Stage 16, from Luchon to Pau, Morelli did indeed win, and came within a few minutes of Romain Maes. But Maes held on, retaining the yellow jersey from beginning to end.
