Campy themselves will not answer to the number in the square controversy. I had saved a Email from then for months that stated " it's a company reference code"

Starting in 1973 the crank arms have a code consisting of a diamond (1970's), circle (1980's), square (late Super Record), with a number in the center denoting the last digit of the year of manufacture (with the exception of the square).

Greg Parker was pretty sure that the "11" in a square was 1985 production, "22" in a square was 1986 production, and "33" in a square was 1987 production. Sounds good to me...
