Subject: [CR]British Frame Builders

I, too, am fascinated by all the information on small-production frame builders from the UK. It also gives me the opportunity to plug my favorite, Stan Pike. Stan built frames for only a short time, from the late 70's through November of 83, when he died at age 46. He has been described as "one of the most highly rated builders" of his time by Hilary Stone, who just happens to have a lovely Stan Pike up for auction on eBay right now: http://ebay.com/<blah> 8789&rd=1 - item number 2250988789 Stan started building in the garage of his home, but eventually bought a shop in Crewkerne, South West of England in the county of Somerset. The shop, formerly Bob White cycles, was re-named Stan Pike Cycles. Stan set up workshops in the back where he built the frames until his death in 83. He supposedly also built frames for Don Farrell cycles, Ken Ryall cycles, Fred Baker cycles, which carried their respective names, and taught Arthur Needham at Argos how to build frames. After Stan's death, his son Phillip, who had been his assistant in the frame building operation, carried on for a short time with a line of frames labeled "Pike of Crekerne", but folded the operation by the mid 80's. I'm still trying to determine the number of frames Stan actually built during his lifetime. I have a frame that was built in February of '83, one of five frames built that month, according to the information that I got from Stan's other son, Steve. I'm continually searching for information on Stan Pike and his frames. Mine can be seen here: http://www.classicrendezvous.com/British/Pike_Stan.htm, but there are still a few minor mistakes in the description.
