At a pet store you can get a set of very cheap brushes for cleaning the tubes in aquarium filters. The middle sized one, about 1 1/4" in diameter and 6" long with very soft bristles, is great for cleaning those races without removing the caps. In fact, when you shove that thing in there and spin it around it'll clean both sides as well as the axle area all in one shot.
