I often have the same problem as you do. I can usually get away with positioning the levers a little bit furthe down on the bars. This seems shorten the reach and it still leaves a comfortable position when riding on the hoods.
I also think GB randoneur bars are a good solution as well, if you don't mind a shallower drop.
