Speaking of Schraeder, I believe most of the English and French old alloy frame pumps had a short hose with a Schraeder head. I understand this for the English pumps, but was always puzzled about the French pumps. I was under the impression that the French never used Schraeder valves in their domestic market. Is this incorrect? Or were these pumps only fitted to bikes for export?

Absolutely correct, and perfect description. I remember selling them, once upon a time. I can't remember the brand either, and doubt they are still made. I picked up a show-card display with several pair of these nifty little widgets at a swap meet a few years back. I used the first pair a couple of months ago on a set of Weinmann box-section rims I built up. Friction-fit, they press neatly into the rim, and have a cool detailed look. I still have several pair left, but I can't offer them to the list since everyone will want a pair, and I don't have 700+ pair to hand out. Besides, it will probably take me a couple of months to find them after my move.

However, when I unearth them, Harvey "funkmaster" Sachs will get a pair, just because he's the funkmaster, and Jamie Swan will get a pair as a template so he can custom fabricate some for the truly needy (and wealthy) aficionado.
