Position of the edge of the chainwheel bolt to the inside of the ring. 151 bcd has 4 ~ 5mm spacing, while 144 bcd has 1 ~2mm spacing. If you want, check out the difference at <http://www.bikecult.com/works/chainring.html>, there's even a 151 crank arm modified to take 144 rings.
