My bad... the strap loop on the pedal AX is not a separate part as I implied. It is separate on the EX, but it is part of the rear cage on the AX., That's one of the diffs.

The image at the link that was posted is what set me straight. A picture is truly worth a thousand words... a number I will soon exceed.

One more note.. The image caption indicates a single bearing. There are two rows of balls in there, very colse together. There have to be two to make a stable system. The fact that they are so close to one another makes it difficult to adjust out all the end play without overtightenting the bearing. A limit of this design, for sure, and not a quality issue per se. On the up side, there is less rocking torque, which is theoretically better biomechanically. For certain, if you put your foot too far above the axle you run into problems... like when dad strapped big wooden blocks to your trike pedals.
