You don't say anything about the fork...if it's a French threaded fork, you need a French size heaadset. However late '80s might put it after that era. If a standard 22.2 stem fits into the fork without a struggle, it's almost certainly an ISO.

If you're putting in some other fork, any ISO 1" headset will work. French headsets are only "wierd" where they attach to the fork. The parts that attach to the frame use the same 30.2 mm diameter as other bikes of the era.
