Got a message from my friend saying that he was at a neighborhood yard sale and saw "an old track bike for $75.00" and did I want it? Since I couldn't check it out immediately, I said to go back and get the guys phone number and I'd check it out as soon as I could. When I went later in the day he was all closed up so I started calling. And calling and calling. I finally got through and made plans to see the bike. This was all of 5 minutes away from my house. I met the seller at his garage 3 days later (they were moving to a new house nearby, I think it was a divorce situation) and amid the old books and stuffed animals he wheels out "his father-in-law's old bike" a no name faded, black-paint track bike with BSA cottered cranks, extra skip-tooth chainring hanging off the crank arm, wood rims with glued tubulars. It had a clamp-on-the seat-stays rear "Schwinn" brake cabled to a lever on the cloth tape wrapped steel track bars. Old leather seat. All original. All the things to get my heart pounding. He tells me that it's been sitting in the basement for years, etc., his wife's dad rode it all over the place and he was selling it the other day. I said great and went to pull the cash out of my pocket when he says that his 18-year old son now wants to take the bike. Well I couldn't keep a kid from wanting to own his grandpop's bike, could I? (Of course I could!!) I said "Just let me know if you ever decide to sell it" and left my phone number. I said I collected old bikes, etc, would give it a good home, yada, yada. I have since been calling once or twice a year and leaving messages "about the old bike" but never get a call back. Maybe I'll try a call now. Fred
