Go to the hardware store and get some Plasti Dip, that stuff you dip tool handles into. It works better than the real thing. It's got a pretty short (year or so) shelf life though, so it may not be more economical compared to the Campy covers, unless you have other uses for it as well.

Auto supply stores often have sets of pliable plastic caps to put over vacuum line fittings for testing purposes. You may find a suitable pair of covers in such a kit.
