Upon arriving at Oregon Ridge Park there were few riders in the parking lot. While I thought the cool weather could have kept some at home it was such a beautiful day I didn’t see why anyone would not want to be on their bikes. It wasn’t long before I spotted Harvey Sachs, Dan Artley and Marty Walsh as well as some others hanging around a vehicle. As I approached the said vehicle I saw a few swap items on the pavement and Harvey wheeling and dealing. I must confess that I bought a long sleeve jersey that belonged to Marty. This ride held a special interest for me as it started at the ski area that I first skied some forty years ago and haven't been back to since. All the lifts had been taken out and now Oregon Ridge is a park with concerts and such. Dan has pointed out which bikes where there so I won’t go over this again. When one thinks of riding so close to the Baltimore beltway, about 7 miles, and a mile off of interstate 83 you would think that the traffic could be heavy. Not so. In fact when we left the park we crossed a busy road and then it was like we were in the country. The riding was somewhat hilly with old farm homes, barns and outbuildings that had been refurbished. Stone fences, split rail fences as well as board fences with a few horses here and there. The scenery was beautiful to say the least and almost no traffic, I couldn’t believe it. The hills were frequent enough to keep most Billy goats satisfied while not needing a super low gear. While riding behind a rider I got this feeling of dejavu. His pedaling and position on the bike seemed so familiar. At that time he turned his head and I thought my god that is Bobby Phillips my old riding, training and racing buddy. I rode up to his side and grabbed his arm, he turned to take a look at the person that had his arm and he exclaimed, “Mark”. We rode and chatted for awhile and then he dropped back for a friend that had falling behind. After catching back up we talked some more and he said I just had to go over to his mom’s after the ride to say hi. It seemed like we had just started the ride when the next thing I know we are pulling into the parking lot with about 35 miles under our belts or tires. I won’t go into the visit, but will say that you should see Bobby’s jersey and trophy collection. There is a photo of the trophies on the link. He did tell me that he is up for induction into the Bicycle Hall of Fame. Bobby did have to two chrome Paramount track bikes that he was given to race in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s although all the parts weren’t hanging on them. Photos at the link below in the Baltimore Retro Ride folder although no Paramount photos.

If you have a chance to make this ride next year do so, you won’t be disappointed. Good company and great riding.
