"I thought it stood for manganese as opposed to tungsten. Both refer to the electrode." Jamie Swan ********** MIG = "Metal Inert Gas" though it's true name is GMAW which is "Gas Metal Arc Welding." When MIG first came on the scene (and literally destroyed the CRAFT of welding overnight <- insert bitterness here) MIG ='d "Molybdenum Inert Gas" welding" but they since adopted it to welding metals other than steels and the name changed to Metal but again, its proper name is GMAW.

TIG is Tungsten Inert Gas welding but its proper name is GTAW or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding.

"Stick" welding is SMAW or Shielded Metal Arc Welding since a molten flux is used to protect the arc & weld metal from environmental (air, etc.) contamination until the weld has returned to solidus.
