1st off, may I say how sorry I am to have even mentioned TIG on this list. I merely wanted to use it as an example of how our knowledge, prejudices and beliefs affect our perception of beauty or ugliness.

MIG is a non standard term used to describe both GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and Flux Cored Arc Welding In other words the filler wire (Metal) acts as a consumable electrode.

TIG is a non standard term for GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) where an arc is formed between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the base metal. Filler metal is fed independently of the arc, just like Oxy/Acetylene welding. You can even fillet braze (Standard term is Bronze Weld) using Silicon Bronze filler. Electrode is always tungsten, either pure or with alloying elements added.

I don't know the details, but if those welds on the Teledyne Titans really were MIG I would be flabbergasted. I'd be less surprised to see Dale posting about a 2004 Mongoose mountain bike he just bought at K-Mart. No MIG process I know of could produce those welds. It would be educational to be proven wrong on this.
