MIG is "Metal, Inert Gas" i.e. "wire feed" welding. (Now officially called GMAW - Gas Metal Arc Welding). The electrode is a wire than is fed into the puddle, consumed and added to the weld joint. MIG is what is supposed to be used for all car-body repair. It's the only welding process that meets the requirements for structural repairs on cars. TIG is "Tungsten, Inert Gas" (now officially called GTAW - Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). This process uses a Tungsten tip as the electrode. It can be done with or without a filler rod, and the electrode is not consumed in the process (although it doesn't last forever). Then there is "regular old Arc Welding" a.k.a. "stick welding" (now MAW) which is the traditional "heavy-duty" method where the "stick" or electrode is clamped into the end of an electrified cable, a second clamp is attached to the workpiece to complete the circuit, and the welder "strikes an arc" to start the process. No Inert gas is used, although the rod can be flux-coated. All of these processes are welding ones, i.e. the base material is melted as part of the joining process. In brazing, the workpiece is not melted. Soldering is like brazing, but done at temperatures of 800 degrees F or less. Bike frames are never soldered!!! You solder your copper plumbing pipes, and electrical connections.... I'm fairly sure (but not 100% certain) that the Teledyne Titans were TIG welded with a filler. Anyone know for sure? I thought it stood for manganese as opposed to tungsten. Both refer to the electrode.
