Hi, Dale--

Actually, it was my nephew, a genuine working blacksmith and also a UBI-trained bicycle mechanic, who examined them and told me they were cast. I think it had something to do with their not appearing "hammered flat" as in the forging process (for instance, on some forged tools you'll sometimes see a logo of a hammer hitting an anvil, to demonstrate genunine forging) , but being cast seeming somewhat "fatter" and more "hollow," or "less consdensed" than forged metal, and, I think, having "seams" as a telltale sign of casting.

But he actually did not elaborate too much, other than than and showing me how his antique anvil had been hand forged in sections "in the old days" by a circle of muscular metalsmiths weilding heavy hammers on molten metal. I should, however, ask him for a more technical definition.

Cheers,

PETER Peter Jourdain Whitewater, Wisconsin
