I don't know the situation in Italy, but I do know that in many countries, manufacturers are taxed on their assets. And a die or mold is considered an asset. So once any product goes out of production, the company immediately destroys any tool who's only purpose is the production of the now discontinued part. They have no choice but to destroy them, since if they don't they have to keep paying the tax.

Isn't government wonderful?
