As the story was told to me, Mike Melton was associated with a cat named Joe Azar who ran a bike shop in the Five Points area of Columbia, SC. Azar has since left the bike biz for high-end audio component sales. >>

Russ,

I had Mike build a fairly nice tandem in the late 1970s I think. A friend in our club of the area Bill Long may have been associated with Azar. He was ABLA rep for NC, left the shop (which one?)and started selling Matsurri Bikes from Japan; now in insurance sales.

He said Mike Melton started building in Japan when posted there in the Army. I knew him but never heard this before. An odd cross cultural footnote.
