Brooks, It's my understanding that Bevel Hogg owned a retail bike shop in Madison, WI called Stella Bicycles or Stella something. I remember the local radio ads with the clicking of spokes in the background and a smooth foreign-sounding voice-over talking up Stella bikes, probably Hogg's voice. Tom French(who then went on to head Trek's sales and marketing for years) and Mike Appel(who in my estimation is one of the best craftsmen in framebuilding, maybe even THE best, if such a contest could be devised, and has worked for Trek at the outset and again later) were also Stella employees who went along with Hogg to Waterloo with Dick Burke's funding. I don't know hoot about Stella of France, but Brooks, are you saying Hogg was the exclusive importer of Stella at the time? And I suppose if your retail bike shop is named Stella, and their aren't anymore Stellas to sell, what do you do, re-name the shop Viscount and sell them? I always thought it was odd that a retail bike shop would be named after the bike brand, it wasn't like being a Schwinn franchise, so i guess now I'm wondering if other bike shops have been named likewise. So anyway, the Stella factory in France burns down(was that the end of the brand?), making Hogg's Madison retail bike shop outta business, I guess, or did Hogg's retail shop stay open, perhaps under a new name? Had Hogg had his eye on a small outfit already, was it one the radar? I guess I still want to know what existed in what form by whom that was the seed for Trek. So what else ya got, Brooks? And thanks. Joe Starck, masidon, wi
