I'm sure you're right. If japanese version hubs have to be 36 holes, then what you suggest is probably the case. I have a campy front small flange track hub which is odd. It's 65mm wide locknut to locknut. Obviously the hubshell is VERY narrow and the axel has not been cut down or anything; it's factory finished and chromed just like a regular one. Drilling? We don't need no stinking drilling! There are NO holes drilled in the flanges. Must be used with those undrilled rims! ;-)
