I've really enjoyed this thread, tho i'm sure it's been hashed over before but being relatively new, it's good to read.

it also addresses to some degree the whole restoration, keep original, preservation, etc. dilemma. i think most on this list agree that bikes with some historical significance be kept as is or at the least kept from further deterioration. but what about most of the bikes owned by members of the list?

there obviously is more grey area to this topic in this hobby/lifestyle.

the gios is a good example of a a frameset that originally was, just a frameset. no parts, unless you got the panto'd bits. so owners put whatever they wanted/could afford on these frames. my 82 super record came from the original owner, he couldn't afford a complete SR gruppo (tho he wanted to) at the time. so he outfitted it with what he could afford. it turned out a mix of NR and SR components. was it period correct? i don't know. he put on a pat.73 NR RD, but he did put it on back in 82! he also changed the rims sometime back. since he was the original owner and made the changes, is it still original?

i've since put a pat.84 SR RD, since the "original" RD had a split pulley. have i now compromised the "authenticity" or "originality" of this bike? and who should really care except me, since it's my bike and i'm the only one the rides it now.

in 20 or 30 years will people say "if it was only original, with its pat.73 NR derailleur, it would be worth even more".
