Well this is fascinating. Last summer I was cycling on the Capital Crescent Trail here in Washington and passed two very fit and very Russian looking lads in full CCCP kit riding racing machines that 1) looked very 1970s, 2) seemed high quality and ridden as such by obvious enthusiasts and 3) just looked "different". I noticed for example the gear levers were farther back on the bottom tube, almost midway. Centerpull Mafac style brakes. Lots of polished alloy (or chrome) and red, of course (!), livery with a lot of decals including what appeared to be flags or ribands on the seat tube. It's very hard to take stock of another machine, let alone two, as you pass at a combined speed of 35-40 mph, but I just KNEW these had to be Russian machines and most likely the riders were from the Russian Embassy, most likely military. Most embassy folks around here couldn't ride a bike more than a block!
Alas, I've never encountered these two again but it was certainly something different. They sure didn't buy these here in the States. Or even on eBay.
