I think a lot of the Schwinn lightweight or Raleigh lightweight Campagnolo equipped object of desire, school of thought has to do with other variables.

What part of the US did you grow up in? Were you rural or big city? Suburbs or in town? Which end of the baby boom age did you grow up in?

I saw a lot more high end Schwinn's then Raleighs in the bike cliques of small town Oregon in the 70s.

Once I was back to Cupertino Bicycle Shop/Palo Alto Bicycle land - the small frame builder was catching on big time, and I saw much less of Raleighs or Paramounts, but an Eisentraut wasn't too odd to see.

That is a unique perspective though, and probably a lot different from someone 20 years older than I, who grew up riding in the NYC bike cliques.
