I remember when these first showed up in the late 1970s; I have used them ever since and I will say that the story of the fourth hole catching the chain pins is a recent phenomenon. I never had a chain pin catch because chain pins don't extend far enough for that to happen. I have no idea why the fourth hole went away. These derailleurs were well know to have the front clamp (straight band style) break if you over tightened the bolt (never had it happen to me).
