Jan, Early Santana tandems used stems with an old Japanese/US quill diameter of .833" or 21.15mm, a thicker walled steerer with the same 24 x 1 threads on the outside. The stems on the earliest bikes were Japanese, either SR or Nitto. Listmember Mark Ritz worked for Santana in their early days, he may have a good comment on this.
