In 1973, Bridgestone was selling a completely Aluminum framed model outfittred with a whole "Crane/Dura-Ace" grouppo. These were massed produced, but very little of them made it to the States. I am not sure how the tubes were joined since they came with what would be considered as "over-sized" lugs. I can't comment on whether the tubes were butted or not, however they were made by Ishiwata.
