J-P Ollivier's "L'Histoire Veridique" has a chapter on it. Seems like he never braked, on a road that went straight with a curve. The curve is a short distance from the exit of a village, so he must accelerated hard and went straight into a tree. One witness claims he went back and forth on the road a few times before crashing into that tree. He was in his car, not on a bike...

Like many champions, his life after cycling appears not to have been a happy one. I haven't read the volume on Ocana yet... but didn't he commit suicide a few years ago?

Excellent books, the Ollivier "L'Histoire Veridique" series. Unfortunately, I believe only the Fausto Coppi book was translated into English. -- Jan Heine, Seattle Editor/Publisher Vintage Bicycle Quarterly http://www.mindspring.com/~heine/bikesite/bikesite/
