Subject: [CR]Vintage Bicycle Quarterly, Women as Tandem Captains

On page 7 of this quarter's Vintage Bicycle Quarterly, there is a picture of Daniel Rebour and his wife standing next to their Herse tandem. However, what caught my eye was the tandem next to them. It is also a mixed tandem, but the Captain is a small woman, while the stoker position is filled by a man with a saddle set at least 4 inches higher than her saddle. Based on the way the saddle/seatposts are adjusted (her's is inserted all the way, while his shows considerable seatpost), I wondered whether or not the bike was actually designed for him to be in front and the riders would periodically switch positions during the grueling Paris-Brest-Paris ride. I'm not a tandem rider, but this makes sense to me. Thanks again to Jan Heine for providing us with the VBQ. Wonderful pictures from Daniel & Simone Rebour's personal photo album.
