"Don't forget the Cardinal Rule of Retro-Cool : Lose those spoke protectors and chainring protectors !!"

Absolutely! Who taught me that back in 1974 when we were both 16? Fellow CR List member Peter Koskinen with whom I was friends since we went to elementary school together. I was riding what I thought was a cool 10-speed for my budget, my brand new Peugeot UE-8, and it had that dorky chain protector which was summarily removed in Peter's folks garage one day I remember. I rode home thinking I was the cat's pajamas or some such thing. Little wonder that Peter and I went our separate ways not long after.. he got into seriously cool cycling and left me in the dorky dust. Me, I had my UE-8 stolen in '77 and... replaced it with a Raleigh DL-1 Roadster. Now, that IS cool. Just off topic. And 30 years later Peter and you lot are still trying your best to make me '70s cool.

A wonderful thread and one that Dale might consider packaging into something for the CR website. It's nice to talk about the "ethos" of classic lightweights like this, the hard to define mojo defining stuff that can't be engineered or explained in practical terms. When this becomes "practical" or sensible, it's no longer a hobby. Or fun.
