A list member wrote to me off-list to clarify my front derailleur tip. Here it is:

What I aways did with the Record front derailleurs to make them less fussy, was to put a washer in with the spacer at the rear - there are enough threads on the bolt to allow this. Just unscrew the bolt and stick in a small washer (I think a washer for a 5mm bolt is the right size) with the cylinder-shaped spacer at the rear of the cage plates, then bolt it back together. It speads the cage just enough so you don't have to trim the front derailleur as much while going through shifts at the rear derailleur. Just remember to align the outside plate of the cage so that it is parallel with the plane of the chainrings (you don't want it to rub and scuff your precious Campy crank).
