IMO,its the "hate campy" thing. When I bought a 1973 Raleigh "Pro" new.It was the first bike I had ever ridden with exceptional brakes with.I won every single impromptu challenge between me and everything else.None of those had not been modified either. I could out stop them so easily,it was laughable.I could watch them chatter from behind. It was so bad,I always let them call "stop",and then they would "chatter" past. I will say that the pads that came on that bike new, seemed to work better than the replacements I bought in about 1980 for it.Seemed to be a different compound?Did they change brake pad compound after 1973?I'd like to know, bcause there was nothing wrong with those first ones. The later ones I have do not even seem like the same brakes.I still have the originals--FWIW. Sincerely,Harris Spracher Waynesboro Va.

Amen. I can lock either wheel with a well set-up Campagnolo sidepull brake at will with good pads. What more can a brake do?
