Kurt asked about:

"Being very ebay naive, I have to ask: Is there any conceivable reason other than outright fraud or terminal stupidity that would explain evergreenhs2's bidding on this item?"

This is the going rate for what is likely the rarest Campagnolo front derailleur made. It is also much more rare than the very first Campagnolo rear derailleurs! If the rear Gran Sport derailleurs from 1951 are now regularly selling for more than $2000, this price would seem to be an apparent bargain for a rarer derailleur that would be needed to complete the same bike or collection.

Would I buy one for myself? Never. Would I begrudge somebody who spent that money on one because they have the financial possibilities to do so? Never. It is all a question of priorities. What I personally find more difficult to understand is the large number of people who assemble huge numbers of cheap, low end bikes and parts, where the sole collection criteria seems to have been 'how cheaply they were purchased'.
