As a follow up to the previous disucssion, the parted out Paramount closed last night. The bits and pieces brought in $857.56, probably at least $200-$300 more than the complete bike would have brought. The NR triple crank went for $203.52, the frame for $266.51 and the wheels for $119.50. The Torpado/Galli, with two days to go, isn't showing much life so far. Results can be seen by going to Steve's seller's page (link below), and looking at completed items.

Thanks to everyone who bid.

Thomas Adams <thomasthomasa@yahoo.com> wrote: If you're not sick to death over the debate regarding the propriety of parting out a "classic" bike, consider, if you will, an eBay experiment I am conducting featuring the frames and parts of my former Paramount and Torpado. Steve Willis is graciously hosting the sales for me out of the kindness of his heart, and a reasonable expectation that funds raised by the sales will be spent in his shop. With a Goodrich KOF project percolating away on the frozen tundra, I need to maximize revenues. Neither bike came to me as a complete original bike, so I decided to break them up.

The Paramount frame had been a '74 P10 that I had been building up as a P15 configuration. It had a Campy triple NR crank and a proper re badged Shimano Crane GS rear mech along with Wienmann CPs, Campy HF hubs and headset. But because I had laced the hubs to modern CR 18 rims (27 inch, to boot), and didn't have proper pedals, Cinelli bars or a stem,we agreed it was appropriate to part out the bike.

Likewise the Torpado/Galli bike. It had a 80% complete Galli group, the non galli parts consisting of a Stronglight headset, Miche BB, Shimano gear levers and Sun rims, and it even had 175 mm cranks. It came to me as a bare frame.

For those who think there's lost more dough in parting out bikes, I'd have to say not so, so far. Of course there are 4 days left to go, but the only items drawing interest are the Campy triple crank and the Brooks saddle. Otherwise, everything sits at 0 bids or right around the opening amount. Of course Galli isn't as desirable as Campy (except when I'm bidding) so maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Neither frame has drawn a bid, but then they are both 62cm+. But at least I have two empty spots in the bike storage racks now.

BTW, if anyone is interested, both frames are fine riders. And yes, I offered both bikes to the list before going to ebay.

Curt Goodrich and I profit from any sales. But Steve and Curt is in no way responsible for this philistine chasing of profits, except Curt indirectly by making such nice bikes that I had to have one.
