Subject: [CR]Bar-end Cable Routing?

Questions about bar-end shifter cable routing are which is functionally the best way to route the cables from the shift levers to the down tube. The other is what are opinions of the best esthetic way to do it.

I'm trying to refit an Alex Singer to allow for a stem-mounted bag (Berthoud) that will rest on a TA front rack. The way I've routed cables is to have them come out of the bottom of drop-part of the bar and arc to the down tube - shortest route and I like the look. This is problematic for the bag however, cables would have to go under the bag.

Was perusing an old Bicycle Trader article on Mario Confente. Showed a pic of him on his bike during his racing days. He was said to be meticulous in his set-up and maintenance. His bar-end cables route to the top of the bars, apparently under the bar tape, much like aero brake cables.

Have also seen cables routed to exit just behind the brake lever clamp, arcing up, then back down to the down-tube. Not my favorite aesthetically, but perhaps the most functional with the bag.

So what gives? Is this just a personal preference thing?
