Subject: [CR]Using shoe polish on leather saddles?

Since we've had postings about old-time shops and frame builders, I have to ask this question about some advice just given to me by another fixture in the American bicycle industry, Mel Pinto.

I was at his warehouse on Friday and he recommended I use some black shoe polish on the seat mounted on my old LeJeune. Have any of you ever done this? If so, does the polish actually stay on the seat? And what effect does it have on your cycling shorts and tights?

By the way, Mel is definitely alive and well, although he did mention having heard rumors of his own demise... He also mentioned that although LeJeune bikes are no longer being made, Monsieur LeJeune is also definitely alive and well in Paris. (I thought that might be of interest to all the LeJeune fans out there.) Cheers, Fred "St." Rafaƫl Rednor - Arlington, Virginia
